WISDOM
FROM REGRET
"I
keep asking
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father,
may give you the Spirit of wisdom and
revelation, so that you may know him better."
Ephesians
1:17
Many
times in my
life people have asked me if I would change anything in my past; did I
have any
regrets? My answer had
always been the same, I would change nothing. However,
now
I think that I might add under the “regrets” category that I do have
moments
that could have been fuller. I would have spent more time with my
children in
play, done more loving things for my husband, shared my heart more
often with
friends, languished longer in the garden where I spend so much time
with my
heavenly Father. More time reveling in the blessing of each new day and
what it
might hold. There were times I should have just sat down and listened.
Times
that I cut short a special moment that should have been allowed to be
completed. I was there when I should have been, but not always in full
awareness of what God was doing in my life at that moment. Does any of
this
sound familiar to you? Looking back over my life I do see areas that
could have
been more, could have had more substance to them. Had I been more aware
in
these moments would life be different today? Maybe, but only the Lord
knows
what we miss out on when we move too fast to hear His voice. When we
look back
at our life (no matter how old or young we are) most of us are filled
with regret for one reason or another. What
we take away from that journey and what we do with the knowledge
attained from
it hopefully is wisdom to do it
differently next time. What God wants us to learn is, yes wisdom from regret, is
great, but looking forward in His
wisdom is excellent!
Wisdom
is also
realizing that we cannot live in the past and just be full of regret. Wisdom knows that we must look forward having
learned from the past to see where God is leading us.
Imploring Him to reveal more and more of His
perfect will and purpose for our lives. All the while being content
wherever He
has us at the moment. God’s wisdom is unfathomable to us.
He is the Alpha and Omega. He knows
everything about you and I even our mistakes before we make them. Our
goal in
asking and receiving wisdom is to know Him better. In verses 18-19 of
Ephesians
from the same chapter it says, “I pray
also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you
may know
the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious
inheritance in
the saints, and his incomparable great power for us who believe.” Sometimes when I am going through a
particularly hard time I have to remind myself that there must be
something I
should be learning. Do I see it right away? Not always. It
takes going through the hard time,
reflecting back on it and sometimes even dissecting it to see what or
how God
wants to use it in my life. Life is a
collective process in which we can attain wisdom in many different
areas of our
life to be used when God reveals His purpose for us. We do however have
purpose
everyday that should never go unanswered. That is to be obedient in the
here
and now where He has placed us. God gives us the hope and the power to
complete
the purpose He has for our lives. He
takes care of the details and we just need to show up and be obedient.
Is it
going to be easy? Most of the time it won’t; we may even question God’s
judgment on the matter, or if He picked the right person for the job.
What
sustains me in these times is that God’s wisdom and timing are always
perfect. God
loves an obedient heart. What we receive in return is completely off
the chart.
Another
nugget of
wisdom that God has blessed me with is that when I’m going through
something
that I’ve been through before while questioning what I missed the first
time,
He reveals to me that it might be directed towards someone close to me
that is
in the learning stage. In other words, I might be traveling that
journey again so
that someone else may watch how I give it to the Lord and allow him to
lead me
through to the other side. It’s not always about us, even though we
would like
to think so. Back to God’s will and perfect timing! This can also mean
a lesson
learned, might be a lesson forgotten with the need to be revisited.
Oop’s! We’re
all human and make mistakes, thank you God for your gift of grace.
Wherever
you are
in your journey to wisdom from regret
ask God to help you attain the right wisdom
at the appropriate time. Check your pulse to see if you can modify
something
from your past to lessen the regret. I challenge you to continue to
look
forward with wisdom, hope, and the power to learn from your past so you
can
live in the perfect will of God.
